Atlantic Health System’s Morristown and Overlook Medical Centers Named Among World’s Best Hospitals and Best Hospitals for Infection Prevention by Newsweek

MARCH 3, 2021 – MORRISTOWN and SUMMIT, NJ – Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center have been named among the World’s Best Hospitals by Newsweek for the third consecutive year of the publication’s ranking. In addition, both Morristown and Overlook are ranked among the Best Hospitals for Infection Prevention in 2021.

The World’s Best Hospitals 2021 ranking is based on responses to an online survey sent to nearly 74,000 doctors, hospital managers, and health care professionals in 25 countries. Every hospital in each country was rated by a score, which is based on recommendations from medical experts, available hospital performance data, and patient satisfaction, such as results from patient surveys.

Atlantic Health System medical centers join hospitals including The Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and Massachusetts General on this prestigious list. Over 2,000 hospitals globally made the World’s Best List. Currently, there are over 6,000 hospitals in the United States and of the 350 hospitals ranked by Newsweek, Morristown is ranked #34, and Overlook is ranked #164.

This year, Newsweek added a dimension for infection prevention to award US hospitals that performed above the national average regarding healthcare-associated infections. Both Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center achieved this distinction.

“We are committed to delivering the highest quality medical care for our patients every day. To be recognized on a global scale is a tribute to the dedicated team of physicians and professionals and all those who work at our hospital,” said Trish O’Keefe, Ph.D., RN, president, Morristown Medical Center. “COVID-19 has profoundly changed how we care for our communities, what hasn’t changed is our focus on extraordinary patient care. We strive to bring the most innovative advancements in medicine resulting in the best possible outcomes and personalized positive experiences.”

“This pandemic has shown how Atlantic Health System’s dedication to our patients, our communities and our fellow team members has made all the difference to so many this year,” said Alan Lieber, president of Overlook Medical Center. “This recognition helps highlight the world-class care that Overlook’s team delivers every day, even in times of crisis.”

The World’s Best Hospitals 2021 recognizes the best medical institutions across 25 countries: USA, Canada, Germany, France, UK, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Israel, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Thailand, Italy, Brazil, India, Spain, Mexico, Poland, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The countries were mainly selected based on the standard of living and life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals, and data availability.

The data was collected by Newsweek and Statista, in collaboration with GeoBlue, during an initial survey period from September to November 2020. The survey was also promoted on newsweek.com.
